Just sayin’–Writings that aren’t songs
Amazing grace

Reading the heavy Jonathan Kozol book, Amazing Grace.  The book takes place in the Bronx where Kozol profiles poverty, violence, dismal educational conditions, drugs, and AIDS yet with the underlying current that innocent children have hope and, of course, potential but it must nurtured before too late.   I note the copyright date and think about New york in the mid ’90s.  There have been many cultural shifts for the better and part of me hopes that all he addresses has been fixed.  That of course is naive.  Even though written a decade ago, education, prison, and healthcare initiatives, especially for the “underserved” has not undergone drastic improvements.  It has in many cases, gotten worse.  Kozol continues to call out the growing segregation in schools and the complex obstacles that perpetuate and strengthen this continued regression.  More mainstream dialogue and action required.
